Description | The New Orleans tourism industry is setting a successful example the rest of the metro economy would do well to emulate.
Rather than waiting around post-Katrina to see what help would be made available, tourism leaders such as Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu, Stephen Perry of the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau and Sandy Shilstone of the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corp. immediately gathered to plan for the recovery.
Then they placed the plan in action. They called and cajoled, recruited and reassured. They made promises to event planners that New Orleans would be restored. Then they kept those promises.
Now, 10 months after Hurricane Katrina begrimed the New Orleans image as a tourism Mecca, the once-unrivaled destination brand name is being rebuilt. CNN hasn’t played this success story with the same emphasis it rewinds events such as the recalling of the National Guard, but word is getting out anyway: New Orleans remains one of the greatest places on Earth to visit.
Just ask the 17,000-plus American Library Association conventioneers who recently left New Orleans with great stories to tell.
This convention was a true test for New Orleans tourism and not just because the librarians were in town. Meeting planners nationwide were watching to see if the Crescent City could still provide a world-class experience for thousands of people at a time. The answer is a resounding yes.
