Description
U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana, a potential Democratic presidential candidate visiting Iowa this week, on Friday touted his Midwestern roots and credentials as a national security expert and former governor.

Bayh, on his fifth trip to Iowa in 12 months, made it clear that he is prepared to campaign hard in the state, even if Gov. Tom Vilsack decides to get in the race for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

"He's a good man. He's done well. But, look, I think all of us need to come to this place where the (nomination) process begins and make our case," said Bayh, referring to the state's leadoff party caucuses in January 2008.

He said that as a fellow Midwesterner, he can relate to the concerns of Iowans.

"Iowans are a lot like Hoosiers. I feel very comfortable here," Bayh said on a taping of "Iowa Press." The public affairs program will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Friday and at 11:30 a.m. July 16 on Iowa Public Television.

"When I travel around your state, it's just a lot like being home," he said. "So I think being from the neighborhood, so to speak, I do think that's an advantage."

Bayh, in cultivating an image as a moderate Democrat, said he "understands the needs of middle-class America," and he has "a proven track record of being more of a uniter than a divider" by reaching out to independents and Republicans.
