DescriptionALBANY, N.Y. -- William Brenner, the longest of long shots for the Republican nomination to challenge Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's re-election bid this year, said Wednesday he was quitting the race.

The decision clears the way for a two-person GOP primary between former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer and Reagan-era Pentagon official Kathleen Troia "KT" McFarland, not that either one had paid much attention to the Sullivan County tax attorney as a potential competitor.

Brenner said he would back McFarland's candidacy.

Brenner said that instead of trying to run against Clinton, he was circulating petitions to become the Republican and Conservative parties' candidate to again challenge U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey in the 22nd Congressional District, which stretches from the Hudson River Valley west to the Binghamton area. In 2004, Hinchey, a liberal Democrat, beat Brenner by a better than 2-1 margin.
