Description | San Francisco mayoral candidate Susan Leal said if elected, she would elevate the status of nonprofits in the city, making it easier for them to work through the bureaucracy at City Hall and creating cultural zones to help arts groups set up shop.
Her proposal was outlined in a plan she calls "Strong Partnerships, Strong Communities" and is intended to help both nonprofit service providers and arts organizations.
With more than 2,400 nonprofits in the city, they are the third largest employer in San Francisco, after City Hall and UC San Francisco.
"They are the glue that holds San Francisco together," said Leal, who is now city treasurer. "When we talk about helping people and delivering services,
when we talk about art and health care and job training, city government doesn't know best, but our nonprofit service providers and organizations on the front-lines do."
