DescriptionBefore Gov. Tom Vilsack (D-Iowa) visited New Hampshire this week few Democrats had ever heard of him and even those that had knew little about him.
But as he finished up a three-day stint here, his first visit explicitly testing the presidential waters, Vilsack was the name on the lips of many high profile Democrats who said they were very surprised they liked him so much.
“I must say that for the first time in a very long time I drove home with a smile on my face,” said State Rep. Jim Ryan (D-Franklin) describing his mood after hearing Vilsack speak for the first time Wednesday night. Ryan informally heads up candidate recruitment for the state party and runs its policy group.
The sentiment was shared by State Rep. Bette Lasky (D-Nashua), who is running to be the next House Democratic Leader.
“I didn’t have any real expectations of [Vilsack],” Lasky said. “But I can’t remember the last time a candidate has held the attention of a crowd the way he did.”
