DescriptionBATON ROUGE -- The House gave final approval Sunday night and sent to Gov. Kathleen Blanco legislation that boosts the pay of state court judges and assistant district attorneys by about $10,000 over the next two years.

Lawmakers voted 84-9 for a minor Senate change to House Bill 126 by Rep. Joseph Toomy, R-Gretna, authorizing the judges' pay raises. A little later, the House voted 95-0 for the same minor Senate change to Toomy's House Bill 1178, approving the pay raise for assistant district attorneys.

The Senate Finance Committee tacked on a provision to both bills that require the Legislature to appropriate the money for both pay raises. Toomy asked the House to go along with the changes. "We thought that was going to be the process" in the first place, he said.
