Description | (CBS/AP) The Senate, as expected, turned back a constitutional amendment Wednesday to ban same-sex marriage.
The proposed amendment was defeated 49-48 on a procedural vote, reports CBS News correspondent Bob Fuss. Backers couldn't garner the 60 votes needed to move ahead with the debate; a sign they weren't even close to the 67 they'd need to actually pass a constitutional amendment.
Republicans say it's an important issue that must be debated. Democrats say it's pure political pandering, designed in an election year to convince religious conservatives that Republicans really do care about their issues. |
