Description | Lt. Gov. Olene Walker said she is considering a 2004 bid for governor but will wait until Gov. Mike Leavitt is confirmed as head of the EPA before deciding.
"I"m weighing two different areas very carefully," Walker said. "I"m not certain I can be the best governor I can if I"m spending 80 percent of my time raising money to run. That"s my top priority. On the other hand, I would like to validate the fact that I"m a very capable governor. I"m torn."
Walker"s comments came Monday after state Attorney General Mark Shurtleff issued a formal opinion that Walker would succeed Leavitt with the full powers of the office and would have the right to choose her own lieutenant governor.
"When the office of governor becomes vacant, the lieutenant governor becomes governor. Period. Not the acting governor," Shurtleff said.
Walker said she was pleased with the opinion.
