Description | Prime Minister Romano Prodi's center-left coalition appeared poised late Monday to retain its grip on several major cities in mayoral races across Italy.
According to projections by the NEXUS institute shown on state-run TV RAI, Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni was to garner 61 percent of the vote, compared to 37 for Gianni Alemanno, a right-wing candidate who served as Berlusconi's agriculture minister. In Turin and Naples, incumbent center-left mayors also appeared to have won re-election in the first round.
Berlusconi, now opposition leader, campaigned extensively for conservative candidates in the mayoral races, insisting the local vote had national political significance and predicting his center-right coalition would mount a comeback. |
