Description | The three-way Republican primary in the race to challenge Michigan's incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow looks like it could become a two-man race soon since candidate Jerry Zandstra of Cutlerville failed to collect enough petition signatures to qualify for the ballot.
State elections officials notified Zandstra on Tuesday that a preliminary review of his petitions found only 14,922 valid signatures. To qualify as a major party candidate in a Senate race, petitions must be filed with valid signatures from 15,000 registered voters.
In addition, Zandstra's petitions drew a challenge from East Lansing attorney Brian Laxton, who submitted documents to state officials Tuesday claiming that nearly 3,000 of the signatures submitted by Zandstra are invalid. |
