Description | HOLMES MILL, Ky. -- Five coal miners have died in a blast at an eastern Kentucky coal mine.
Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher said one man was able to get out alive. He said rescue teams initially found three dead workers, then came across two more.
There was no immediate word on the condition of the surviving miner.
A federal mine safety official said the explosion at Harlan County's Darby Mine No. 1 happened just after midnight Friday. The underground mine is located in a mountainous region near the Virginia border.
The cause of the blast was under investigation. |
