Description | Breaking weeks of silence on one of the state’s hottest issues, Sen. Jim Talent said Monday he opposed a November ballot measure aimed at safeguarding early stem-cell research in Missouri.
The announcement caps speculation about the Missouri Republican’s position on the issue, which has generated passionate feelings and fueled a barrage of criticism from his likely November opponent for re-election, Democrat Claire McCaskill. McCaskill, the state auditor, backs the measure.
Talent’s stand on stem-cell research has taken some confusing twists. For four years, he voiced support for federal legislation that would ban all human cloning, including that used in early, or embryonic, stem-cell research. The legislation was sponsored by Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, a fellow Republican.
Then, on Feb. 10 as his re-election fight with McCaskill heated up, Talent stunned Missouri’s anti-abortion leaders by renouncing that support.
The senator’s Feb. 10 change generated denunciations by a host of leading Missouri conservatives, including the Missouri Catholic Conference.
A January poll by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch showed that about two-thirds of Missourians supported the measure. |
