Description | Democratic discontent is boiling to the surface, raising the question of whether the party will follow its history and once again disintegrate in a crucial election year.
For a long time, Michigans Democratic faithful have been quietly grumbling about Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Engage party loyalists in a not-for-publication conversation and you nearly always hear the same litany of complaints: She has surrounded herself with mediocrity, shes failed to emerge as a decisive leader, she wont listen to or court the Democratic establishment.

On a recent broadcast of WDIV-TVs "Flashpoint" show, Detroit Democratic strategist Adolph Mongo thrashed the governor for being oblivious to the disaster facing Michigans largest city. "Everybody I talk with the people who played a major role in her campaign in Detroit they arent going to work for her this time," Mongo says. "Shes been silent on every major issue important to this state and this city. There are a lot of Democrats who arent happy."
Mongo says the impact wont necessarily be that hard-core Democrats flock to Republican Dick DeVos this fall. But they may be less likely to write checks and roll up their sleeves on Granholms behalf. Granholm needs a strong showing in Detroit, where shes been AWOL. Yet Mongo predicts a repeat of the Blanchard-Engler contest in 1990, when disgruntled city voters stayed home in droves to express their disdain for the Democratic incumbent. |
