Description | A three-term lawmaker from Salisbury is the first Democratic legislator to call publicly for House Speaker Jim Black to step down from his leadership post in the wake of allegations of illegal fundraising.
Now, she has company in a second Democrat suggesting that Black relinquish his leadership post.
Rep. Lorene Coates said she took the step because of attacks by her Republican opponent and constant questions about Black from constituents. She said she also worried Black’s troubles would distract lawmakers once the legislative session starts in May.
“I just think he really needs to step aside at this time,” said Coates, D-Rowan. “He has been a friend to me, but I think he needs to focus his time on the court case. The Legislature, we need to be taking care of the business of North Carolina.”
