Description | When Gov. Christine Gregoire signed legislation Thursday moving the primary from the third week in September to the third week in August starting in 2007, it was applauded by state and local election officials if not by all politicians.
Secretary of State Sam Reed, who made the measure his top legislative priority, called it "the single most important election reform passed in recent years.
"It means that our armed forces and Washington voters around the world will receive their ballots on time. The new date gives election workers more time to prepare for the November general election," Reed said in a statement Thursday. "This change is fundamental to improving public trust and confidence in our democracy."
The ultraclose, hotly litigated governor's election in 2004 took seven months to resolve. It caused election officials to fear the chaos that could result from a tight race in the September primary, less than two months before the November election.
For other reasons, some politicos think the primary should have been moved even earlier, perhaps May or June. Even with the new date, Washington's primary will be later than those of 33 other states. |
