SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - With Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt poised to take the helm of the Environmental Protection Agency, the 2004 race for Utah's governor is about to get interesting.
President Bush announced Monday that Leavitt was his choice to replace Christie Whitman as the chief of the country's environmental policy. Before now, Leavitt had been cautious about committing to a political future in Utah while also sending signals that he would likely not seek the EPA job.
''This is a major, major announcement,'' said political pollster Dan Jones, who also serves as associate director of the University of Utah's Hinckley Institute of Politics. ''It changes the entire dynamic of the gubernatorial election.''
The news took many in the state's political circles by surprise. It is bound to open up the field of Republican gubernatorial candidates, said state GOP executive director Chris Bleak.
Bleak predicted a competitive election, one that's likely to include former Utah Congressman James Hansen and former U.S. ambassador Jon Huntsman Jr. |
