Description | Kelly Doran, a shopping center developer who ran for the U.S. Senate and then joined the campaign for the Democratic nomination for Minnesota governor, is about to drop out of that race, a source close to his campaign said Thursday night.
Another source, a longtime political operative also close to the Doran campaign, said three people involved in the campaign told him Doran planned to withdraw from the gubernatorial race. Both sources asked not to be identified because Doran had not announced his decision publicly. He was expected to make the announcement today.
The new development in the campaign for the Democratic-Farmer-Labor nomination was first reported Thursday afternoon on a political Web site, www.checksandbalances.com.
Doran refused to comment. "I'm not going to confirm that tonight," he told the Pioneer Press. State Sen. Sheila Kiscaden of Rochester, Doran's lieutenant governor running mate, also refused to either confirm or deny that she and Doran were about to drop their campaign.
In a straw poll of people who attended DFL precinct caucuses on March 7, Doran trailed far behind the other three major DFL candidates. Doran got 6 percent of the vote in the straw poll.
