DescriptionA Republican Party reeling from scandal, internal battles and bad luck hopes Tuesday's primary election will put it on the path to recovery.

They believe the governor's mansion and a suburban Chicago seat in Congress are winnable, and they hope to hold the seat occupied by retiring GOP U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde.

But the Republicans vying for the gubernatorial nomination have called names, traded accusations of misconduct and torn down each other's records. Their campaigns also have been overshadowed by a federal corruption trial involving the last GOP governor, George Ryan, whose fate is now in the hands of a jury.

With Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich potentially vulnerable over ethics and his handling of the state budget, Republicans fought hard for the gubernatorial nomination.

Judy Baar Topinka, the three-term state treasurer and former head of the Illinois Republican Party, was the chief target, facing accusations that she was part of a corrupt network of political insiders.

Her most vocal critic was Jim Oberweis, the Aurora dairy owner and investment manager who has run twice for U.S. Senate. He ended the campaign season by proposing that he and two other candidates draw straws to see who would stay in the race and who would drop out.
