Description | Cook County Board President John H. Stroger Jr. remained hospitalized Sunday, but was moved out of the intensive care unit at Rush University Medical Center.
Stroger was moved to a "step-down" unit at the hospital, according to a news release by Rush University Medical Center.
Stroger remained in "serious but stable" condition, although he has shown improvement and is more alert, communicative, and asking questions of his doctors, the release said.
He still suffers from left-side weakness but his doctors felt his condition had improved enough that he could be moved to another unit where his family will have greater access to him.
Stroger suffered a stroke last Tuesday and has been hospitalized since that time. He is running for re-election as County Board president, and voters will choose between Stroger and county Commissioner Forrest Claypool in the Democratic primary election on Tuesday.
Despite Sunday's good news about Stroger's health, questions remained about whether he should be re-elected to another term, NBC5's Dick Kay reported.
Claypool won the endorsement and pledges of support from North Shore Rep. Jan Schakowsky Sunday, but the candidate continued to not focus on his opponent's health. |
