DescriptionThe Labor Party, having unofficially admitted it will not be forming the next government, is now focusing on the next question: what portfolios it should demand in coalition negotiations with Kadima.

If the polls prove accurate, Labor can expect to receive seven or eight portfolios. Party sources said Labor chair Amir Peretz will demand either the Finance Ministry or an expanded Ministry of Industry, Trade and Employment, but the latter is considered more realistic, since Kadima chair and Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is thought to be keeping the finance portfolio for fellow Kadima MK Abraham Hirchson

Labor will also request the Education Ministry, which Peretz has promised to MK Yuli Tamir. However, Kadima founder Ariel Sharon had promised this portfolio to Prof. Uriel Reichman, and Olmert may prefer to honor this promise

MK Isaac Herzog, who is number two on Labor's Knesset slate, is earmarked for the Justice Ministry, unless Labor demands the Foreign Ministry, in which case he would be its candidate for that job. Labor also wants to return Ophir Pines-Paz to the Interior Ministry and Shalom Simhon to the Agriculture Ministry.
