MISHAWAKA — President Bush had some trouble saying Rep. Chris Chocola’s name correctly but had no trouble helping the Republican congressman raise money for his re-election campaign.

Bush raised more than $600,000 for the two-term representative during an appearance Thursday at a $500-a-plate luncheon attended by about 560 people in Bethel College’s gymnasium while more than 400 people protested outside.

While the protesters waved signs such as “Impeach Bush,” and “Immigrant rights are human rights,” as the presidential motorcade drove past, supporters inside clamored around Bush after his 30-minute speech to shake his hand or get an autograph.

Despite Bush’s sagging approval ratings — about 40 percent nationwide — Chocola was happy to have the president campaigning for him...
