Description | Former U.S. Sen. Peter Fitzgerald’s been out of office 14 months now, and he’s filling his days with baseball and banking.
The maverick Republican sold his house in Inverness last October, leaving only family ties back in Illinois as he builds a new home in a Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C.
He sounds happy to be retired from politics, but he still didn’t mince words when asked if his GOP can defeat Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich this fall.
“I think it would be political malpractice if our Republican candidate for governor does not defeat Rod Blagojevich,” said Fitzgerald, citing the governor’s low public approval ratings and the multiple probes surrounding his administration.
Fitzgerald recently sat down with the Daily Herald editorial board and also answered more questions in a separate interview prior to that session. What follows is a full, edited transcript of the two interviews: |
