DescriptionGov. Dirk Kempthorne of Idaho, a conservative Republican whose name has been mentioned off and on for a cabinet post, is reportedly President Bush's choice to be the next secretary of the interior.

The president was expected to announce the nomination of Mr. Kempthorne at the White House later this afternoon, The Associated Press reported, attributing the information to Republican officials.

Mr. Kempthorne would replace Gale Norton, who recently announced her intention to step down and return to her home state, Colorado.

Mr. Kempthorne, 54, was elected governor of Idaho after six years in the United States Senate. In mid-2003, he was rumored to be under consideration to succeed Christie Whitman as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. After President Bush's re-election in 2004, Mr. Kempthorne was mentioned again as a possible cabinet member.

Mr. Kempthorne was executive assistant to the director of the Idaho Department of Public Lands from 1976 to 1978, according to The Almanac of American Politics. From 1978 to 1981, he was executive vice president of the Idaho Home Builders Association.

Kempthorne, who was first elected governor in 1998, is also a former senator. The Interior secretary job, which oversees federal lands, requires Senate confirmation.
