DescriptionSEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD

The 48th District has been changing, and it makes sense for Rep. Rodney Tom to keep in tune with the district by changing political parties.

Tom, one of the most progressive members of the House Republican caucus, has announced he will leave the GOP to pursue, as a Democrat, the district's Senate seat, now held by Republican Luke Esser.

Esser has left himself ripe for challenge with a voting record increasingly discordant with much of his district. He has been a regular vote against gay rights, against abortion rights, against a simple majority for school funding measures and -- in particular contradiction to his district's interests -- against increases in transportation funding.

Tom has voted the other way on all those issues. Esser tries to make too much of the fact that Tom has endorsed him in previous elections. Simple party courtesy should not be mistaken for endorsement of Esser's every position.
