DescriptionDemocrat leads rivals in funds

Tammy Duckworth's campaign fundraising for retiring U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde's west suburban seat far outpaced her two Democratic primary rivals by pulling in $396,828 in the first two months of the year, according to federal campaign finance reports made available Friday.

But one of her rivals for the Democratic nomination, Rolling Meadows software engineer Christine Cegelis, suggested that Duckworth's filing with the Federal Election Commission showed little support from within the district.

Duckworth, an Iraq war veteran from Hoffman Estates, is in a three-way Democratic contest with Cegelis and Wheaton College professor Lindy Scott for the 6th District seat. The winner of the March 21 primary will take on state Sen. Peter Roskam, a Wheaton lawyer who is unopposed in the GOP primary.

Roskam's fundraising slowed down over the two-month period, bringing in just $74,167. But his numbers will jump up the next reporting period, reflecting a fundraiser this week with House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and a campaign appearance by Vice President Dick Cheney in Addison on Monday. Roskam has $806,928 in cash on hand--well more than any Democrat.

But the report demonstrates how Duckworth also has benefited from her support among prominent Democrats. Since entering the race in mid-December, Duckworth has held fundraisers with House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, Sens. Dick Durbin and Barack Obama of Illinois, and on Sunday, Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York will hold an event for her in New York.
