Republicans face a fight to hold California’s 24th District, a GOP stronghold that backed Rep. Elton Gallegly (R) in 2004 with 62 percent of the vote.
Their difficulty stems from Gallegly’s announcement last week as the filing deadline arrived that he would not seek an 11th term in November.
He had already taken steps to run, which means Gallegly will definitely be on the ballot and, in all likelihood, will beat his only challenger, Michael Tenenbaum, and be his party’s nominee come the June 6 primary.
If that happens, Republicans say, Democrats will be able to make a strong case that although voters do not see eye to eye with Democrats on everything at least their candidate wants to serve. Jill Martinez, a pastor, is the only Democrat on the ballot.
“The national party cannot just assume that Elton will survive” and win the election, said John Stoos, a GOP strategist who ran state Sen. Tom McClintock’s 2003 gubernatorial campaign and is now working on a congressional campaign in California’s 50th District.
“They have to come in and campaign for it,” Stoos continued, referring to the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC). “You know how close it’s going to be this fall. The Republicans are going to do everything we can. Any of these races can be a tipping point. When you’re talking about [a handful of] seats separating the majority and minority, it’s going to be quite a battle this fall.” |
