DescriptionState Sen. Roy Ashburn won't run for Congress but a local attorney will, according to separate announcements Thursday.

Ashburn's decision means smoother sailing for state Assemblyman Kevin McCarthy, who will run for the congressional seat.

The pair of Bakersfield Republicans -- had they faced off -- were expected to wage a bitter battle for June's primary election.

"In politics, there's a time to fight and there's a time to unite," Ashburn said during an afternoon press conference. "This is a time to unite."

Ashburn endorsed McCarthy, a sometimes-rival, saying the ongoing division in Kern's Republican party isn't healthy.

Bakersfield lawyer Steve Nichols, a Republican, will formally declare his candidacy this afternoon.
