Description | Democratic colleagues of Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) will have to learn to live with the independent-minded conservative Texan for another two years.
On Tuesday, Cuellar narrowly averted a runoff with former Rep. Ciro Rodriguez (D-Texas), the well-liked onetime Congressional Hispanic Caucus chairman who received donations from more than a dozen House Democrats.
On the House floor yesterday afternoon, Cuellar was approached by a broad range of members seeking to offer congratulations, from Republican Rep. Tom Davis (Va.) to liberal Democratic Rep. Raúl Grijalva (Ariz.). Grijalva gave money to Rodriguez.
In between the hugs, handshakes and good humor, Cuellar sought out some of his onetime doubters, telling them he will be around for another two years.
“For all those members who feel they know my district better than I do, they’re just plan wrong,” he said later. “I don’t appreciate it. What happened to the incumbency rule?”
For some, the message did not go over well. Rep. Charlie Rangel (N.Y.), a senior Democrat who supported Rodriguez, said he was not happy that Cuellar had approached him yesterday. |
