An excerpt...
"Former U.S. Rep. Joe Hoeffel bowed to the wish of Gov. Ed Rendell to drop out of the race for lieutenant governor on Wednesday, one day after announcing his candidacy at an event in Pittsburgh.

The surprise reversal turned a scheduled press conference at a Harrisburg coffee shop about Hoeffel's candidacy into one where he stood next to Rendell to announce his withdrawal.

It also diminished the possibility that Rendell would go into the fall general election with another Philadelphia-area Democratic candidate on his ticket against an opponent with a geographic edge with voters in the Pittsburgh area.

"There are two things I did not expect to happen today," Hoeffel told reporters. "I did not expect the governor to be at this press conference, and I did not expect this announcement press conference to turn into a withdrawal press conference."

However, Hoeffel also said he was bowing to Rendell's wish that he not challenge the sitting lieutenant governor, Catherine Baker Knoll, a Pittsburgh-area native who could help offer geographic balance on Rendell's ticket against his likely Republican opponent, former Pittsburgh Steelers star Lynn Swann."
