DescriptionBurlington voters have a tough choice Tuesday when they go to the polls to elect the city's first new mayor in 15 years. Each of the leading candidates -- Republican Kevin Curley, Democrat Hinda Miller and Progressive Bob Kiss -- has a clear vision of the job and brings strengths and experience to the race.

The city needs that clarity and leadership moving forward.

Burlington is a great place to live, visit, work and study. Arts and culture thrive here. Three colleges and a major hospital contribute to the city's educational and economic well-being. The vitality of Burlington's downtown has survived nearby big-box retail. And the city's neighborhoods offer an ethnic and economic mix.

But Burlington faces challenges. Municipal spending is lean and needs to be leaner. Affordable housing is difficult to find. Property taxes are considered high. And there is a sense that growth and economic expansion could too easily pass this city by.

The next mayor must be a cheerleader for everything wonderful about Burlington, a task-master to ensure the city runs well on a tight budget, a skilled negotiator to entice cutting edge industry, a visionary to guide development and housing, and a guardian of the most vulnerable.

Miller best fits that job description.
