DescriptionCAMBRIDGE (AP) -- Christy Mihos, a Republican who made millions through his family's convenience store chain, plans to formally enter this fall's Massachusetts gubernatorial race as an independent, a top political adviser said Wednesday.

The purposely spartan announcement will be made Thursday evening in front of the Statehouse, Mihos himself said earlier in the day. He did not return calls later Wednesday.

"Christy is economically conservative and socially liberal. He is a true independent," said Peter Pendergast, the Mihos campaign manager. "The largest bloc of voters in the state -- the 49 percent who are unenrolled -- are similarly independent. The voters of Massachusetts have a history of electing the best candidate."
