Description
Gov. Tom Vilsack was in an Ames church basement surrounded by familiar faces a few days ago, but his words were aimed as much at donors and opinion leaders thousands of miles from Iowa as they were at the Story County Democrats.

Americans' sense of duty to one another has been stifled by worry, Vilsack told them, refining the message he has carried with him around the country in the past several months.

He referred to Oliva Smith, the West Liberty woman whose husband was killed in Iraq but who told Vilsack he died trying to protect his comrades.

"It was clearly something very meaningful to him. It was genuine, nothing theatrical," Jane Halliburton of Ames said about Vilsack's Feb. 11 speech to the 200 Story County Democrats. "I wouldn't have necessarily identified it as a campaign speech."

But Iowans should make no mistake — Vilsack is preparing to run for president in 2008.
