Description | Republicans, who have a strong support base in this conservative-leaning state, are mounting an aggressive challenge in their effort to take back control of the governor's office they lost four years ago. The contest between Hodges and Sanford seems too close to call.
Hodges won the office in a 1998 upset over Republican incumbent David Beasley, pulling away an estimated 20 percent of the Republican vote in the process.
But Hodges prevailed by assembling an odd coalition, motivated by issues that were raging that year, of voters and donors who supported increased gambling and opposed the state's practice of flying the Confederate flag over the Capitol in Columbia.
There are no such issues to propel Hodges this year, and Republicans are determined that the crossover will be much less in this election. |
