| Description | AP) St. Paul DFL gubernatorial candidate Kelly Doran made sure he didn't get beat in the one race he was in a position to control, using $1.85 million in personal loans to claim Tuesday's pocketbook primary.
All candidates were required to file reports with the state detailing their campaign fundraising in 2005. It's a closely watched gauge of campaign credibility -- and the last time the candidates and political parties must open their books until August.
Doran, a wealthy shopping center developer, easily led the money chase, but all of his gubernatorial rivals collected far more dollars from individual contributors.
"Money alone is not going to guarantee any kind of electoral success, but money will get you into the game," said Dan Hofrenning, chairman of the St. Olaf College political science department. "He's going to have to be taken seriously."
Doran is one of four major Democratic candidates vying for the nomination to take on GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
Pawlenty reported collecting more than $811,000 in 2005. That left him with $721,000 in the bank after he paid his bills.
Among Doran's DFL competitors: Attorney General Mike Hatch drew $501,000 and state Sen. Steve Kelley brought in $266,000, including $13,500 from a personal loan. State Sen. Becky Lourey reported raising $63,174 since she entered the race in November. |
