Tessa Hafen, spokeswoman for Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), became the third Capitol Hill press secretary this cycle to decide the grass looks greener on the politicians’ side.

Hafen left Reid’s office Friday and will challenge Rep. Jon Porter (R-Nev.) in November.

She follows Dan Maffei, who gave up speaking for Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee last year to challenge Rep. Jim Walsh (R-N.Y.), and Nick Reid, who left Rep. Jim Ryun (R-Kan.) to return home to Wisconsin to challenge Rep. David Obey (D-Wis.).

“Tessa’s poise, know-how, integrity and knowledge of Nevada have served Sen. Reid and Nevada tremendously,” Reid chief of staff Susan McCue wrote in a staff memo that was published in the Ralston Report, a Nevada political tipsheet. “She is skilled in navigating the intersections of sound public policy and public affairs.”

Despite winning re-election with 54 percent of the vote last year, Porter can probably expect the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to target him as long as he remains in Congress, thanks to the make-up of his district.

The 3rd district, which is completely within Clark County, encompasses most of Las Vegas’ suburbs and was drawn after the 2000 election to be competitive between the parties.

In the 2004 presidential election, President Bush bested Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) by 1 point, winning 50 percent to 49 percent. In 2000, Al Gore won by 1 point.
