Description | Chile has a new female president, the UK had Margaret Thatcher, and last year Germany voted in Angela Merkel as chancellor. So, could 2007 be the year that France votes in its first Madame la Presidente?
At the moment, it looks like a distinct possibility, as Socialist politician and mother-of-four Segolene Royal tops the popularity polls.
The 52-year-old regional premier of Poitou-Charentes has soared in popularity since she came under sneering attack last year from male politicians from within her own party.
Yet, as if to prove the difficulties for any woman going for the top job in French politics, the French media has been filled with the burning question of whether or not she should have worn high heels on her recent foreign trip to Chile.
And of course, there is the small issue of her partner, Francois Hollande. While Segolene Royal topped the polls as the most popular potential presidential candidate - with the ambitious interior minister Mr Sarkozy coming fourth - there was another twist.
Mr Hollande, the Socialist leader and Ms Royal's long-term romantic partner, languished in eighth place. |
