DescriptionU.S. Representative John Shadegg of Arizona said he is entering the race to replace Tom DeLay as House majority leader.

``I believe that a majority of Republicans in the House understand the need for real, thorough reform,'' Shadegg said in a statement. ``We must renew our commitment to the principles that won us a majority in the first place: fiscal discipline, smaller government, lower taxes, a strong national defense, returning power to the states, and greater personal freedom.''

The race, until now, has centered on two veteran party leaders, acting House Majority Leader Roy Blunt, 56, and House Education and Workforce Committee Chairman John Boehner, 56. Shadegg was encouraged to run by lawmakers including Jeff Flake of Arizona, who say a third candidacy could at least force a second ballot in the race and a broader debate over government spending and ethics.

Both Blunt and Boehner are claiming progress in their drive to gather the 116 Republican votes needed to win the Feb. 2 election. The majority leader holds the No. 2 job in the House after speaker and plays a key role in pushing the party's agenda by setting the schedule for votes on legislation.
