Description | WASHINGTON -- A liberal Democrat and a moderate Republican will be introducing conservative federal appeals court judge Samuel Alito on Monday before his Supreme Court confirmation hearings begin.
Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg and former Republican Gov. Christie Whitman will serve as the home state representatives when they present the New Jersey native to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Traditionally, a nominee is introduced by his two home state senators. But Democratic Sen. Jon Corzine, elected New Jersey's governor in November, declined to introduce Alito. Corzine's office did not immediately comment on why he declined to introduce Alito.
"It's courtesy, it's the normal thing that the home state senators do," said Lautenberg spokesman Charles Walston. "The senator will also speak on the importance of the Supreme Court and why such hearings are important." |
