DescriptionMONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Two veteran lawmakers want Alabama voters to decide if they want to hold a convention to write a new state constitution.

The current constitution was written in 1901 and has been amended more than 700 times. State Senator Ted Little of Auburn and House Speaker Pro Tem Demetrius Newton of Birmingham said the document was designed for the "post Civil War era" and is outdated.

Newton and Little Wednesday prefiled a proposed constitutional amendment. It calls for voters to go to the polls in November to decide if they want to hold a constitutional convention. If voters approve, they would return to the polls to elect 105 male delegates and 105 female delegates to the convention. The convention would begin in July of 2007 and would have to be completed by June 2008.

Voters would then decide whether to ratify the new constitution. If approved it would take effect on Jan. 1, 2009.
