Democrats believe they have a telling issue, the reign of "their" man Mitch, as they look ahead to 2006 elections for Congress and control of the Indiana House.

Republicans fear they could be right. That's one reason the House Republican majority, wanting to stay a majority, is determined to push its own property tax relief plan, despite critical comments about it by Gov. Mitch Daniels.

It's no secret that the Republican governor has alienated some voters during his first year in office. The depth of disdain is staggering as measured in a professional opinion poll conducted at the end of November in the 2nd Congressional District.

Only 31 percent of likely voters responding in the poll had a positive opinion of Daniels, a plummeting of popularity since he breezed to victory over Democrat Joe Kernan with a superb campaign during which he was praised by President Bush as "my man Mitch."

House Democratic Leader B. Patrick Bauer of South Bend and other Democrats now say the governor is "their" man in the sense of helping them to reclaim a majority in the House and perhaps win some congressional seats as well.
