Description | I am compelled to draw the attention of your readers to the words of Gen. George Washington, who issued strict guidelines to the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War on the issue of preventing abuse and torture of enemy prisoners by his troops.
I quote from a highly regarded book published last year titled "Washington's Crossing," by David Hackett Fisher. "He (Washington) often reminded his men that they were an army of liberty and freedom, and that the rights of humanity for which they were fighting should extend even to their enemies,"(Page 276). The author continues, "Other orders went out for the care of prisoners of war, and Washington and his officers set a high standard in their treatment of Hessian captives at Trenton." |
