Del. Anthony G. Brown, a second-term legislator from Prince George's County, has accepted an offer to be Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley's running mate in next year's governor's race, the two men confirmed yesterday.

O'Malley (D) said he will formally announce his pick Monday morning at an event in Brown's home town of Mitchellville before the two head out on a three-day tour of the state.

"I could not be happier in the lieutenant governor candidate we've been able to recruit and persuade," O'Malley told reporters in Baltimore, calling Brown (D) "a person of commitment and integrity."

In an interview, Brown, 44, who is majority whip in the House of Delegates, said he had accepted O'Malley's offer "very enthusiastically" during a dinner attended by the two men's families Wednesday night in Baltimore.

There has been much speculation about Brown's political future since his recent return from duty in Iraq as an Army reservist. Brown, the son of a Jamaican father and a Swiss mother, considered running for state attorney general but said he decided that this opportunity made more sense.

Brown's selection was almost universally praised by Democrats yesterday, including Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan (D), O'Malley's rival in the Democratic primary.
