Two fresh indicators were leading New Jersey Democratic insiders to conclude Monday that Gov.-elect Jon Corzine (D) has settled on Rep. Bob Menendez, the third ranking Democrat in the House, to succeed him in the Senate.

A formal announcement could come sometime this week, these insiders believe — perhaps as early as today, but more likely on Wednesday or Thursday.

“I’m not sure about the timetable, but I suspect it will be before Thursday,” said Rep. Bill Pascrell (D), who withdrew his name from consideration for the Senate seat Monday and endorsed Menendez.

Pascrell said he talked with Menendez on Monday afternoon, then left word of his decision on Corzine’s mobile phone. He called Menendez “the best candidate at this time,” and said he can’t envision Corzine turning to anyone else for the seat.

“I’m not going to say it can’t happen, but I think it’s least likely to happen,” Pascrell said.

Also on Monday, Menendez, who has leaned on state and national Hispanic leaders to apply pressure on Corzine, returned to New Jersey from Puerto Rico, where he had raked in more cash for his tops-in-the-delegation campaign war chest. But that trip may have been interrupted for a sit-down with Corzine.

Exactly what transpired in unclear. Menendez left for the island last Friday, and one source close to Menendez said he was not originally slated to fly home on Monday. Other sources suggest the Congressman’s travel itinerary was altered in some other way — possibly to accommodate a trip-within-a-trip back to New Jersey over the weekend.

Corzine’s camp refused to comment on any of the speculation. But a source close to the governor-elect said that as of late Monday afternoon there were no plans for a Tuesday announcement of any sort.
