WASHINGTON - The coming year may well be a perilous one for the Republicans, who have been laboring to build a durable governing majority.
The master planners, led by Karl Rove, have long envisioned a generation of Republican hegemony, financed by big business and supported by fiscal and religious conservatives, blue-collar workers with traditional values, independents who are hawkish on national security, and the growing Latino electorate. But on the eve of the congressional election season, Rove's daunting dream is in danger.
You know things must be going badly, because that's what the Republicans are saying about themselves.
Naturally, they believe (with good reason) that the Democrats are not necessarily poised to capture either the House or Senate next year, in part because the opposition party still seems fixated on bashing President Bush instead of articulating what it stands for. But the GOP mood is growing darker - as evidenced by these assessments, offered the other day at a public forum held a block from the White House: |
