Description | Larry Drown, who has run twice for statewide offices as a Republican, announced this week he would run in 2006 as a Democrat. He said he wants to offer voters an alternative to candidates he characterized as the left-leaning Sanders and right-wing Republicans, Richard Tarrant and Greg Parke.
In 2000, Drown challenged Deborah Markowitz, Democratic incumbent secretary of state, tallying 36.5 percent of the vote to her 61.2 percent. He ran as a Republican again in 2002, this time challenging William Sorrell, the Democratic incumbent attorney general. He received 30.4 percent of the vote to Sorrell's 56.6 percent.
Drown switched to the Democratic Party in 2004 to take on Sanders for Vermont's sole seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, picking up 7.1 percent of the vote to Sanders' 67.4 percent. |
