DescriptionDecision day is Jan. 5 -- Caucus Day.

That's when Burlington Democrats will take their first step into the post-Peter Clavelle era by choosing a candidate for mayor in the March election.

Party regulars might have a chance to see the two remaining Democratic candidates up close before then. Andy Montroll and Hinda Miller said they are willing to meet in a debate.

Such an encounter could be of interest beyond the political junkie crowd. A new mayor will be a novelty. Clavelle has served six terms since defeating Republican Peter Brownell in 1995. He also was mayor from 1989 to 1993.

Since Clavelle announced in September he wouldn't run for re-election, voters have seen several potential mayors. All have been in favor of fiscal responsibility, affordable housing and a high quality of life in Burlington, but specifics have been short, as have some of the candidacies.

The participants have included state Rep. John Tracy and city lobbyist Karen Moran Lafayette. The two Democrats said they were interested in the office and then decided they would pass on the race.
