Former Texas Supreme Court justice and Arlington lawyer Bob Gammage may soon throw his hat into the ring for governor.

Some Democrats say Gammage — also a former state representative, state senator, U.S. representative and justice on the Texas Court of Appeals — is the key to winning the top of the ballot next year. Republicans beg to differ.

For now, Gammage said he’s weighing his options. “It’s something I didn’t plan to do ... but I’ve been getting a lot of calls about it,” said Gammage, 67. “I may not be the right person.

“If the right person stepped up, I’ll throw my support behind them. ... But right now, we don’t have the right person.”

Gammage, a longtime Democrat, said he wants to make sure fellow party members are well-represented on the ballot in the March primaries and the November election. Candidates can begin filing Dec. 3.

“This state has no leadership, not with this bunch of Republicans,” Gammage said. “They can’t seem to wield power without abusing it. ... They can’t do it competently.

“My concern is about what is happening in state government and its failure to address problems of the day.”
