DescriptionDropping a bombshell into Cook County politics, Sheriff Michael Sheahan said today that he will not seek re-election to a fifth term--setting the stage for a battle for the high-profile office.

"I just thought it was time to move on and let someone else give it a chance," Sheahan said. "You feel sometimes it's time."

Sheahan, 62, said he would like to see his chief of staff -- former state Rep. Tom Dart -- succeed him, but other powerful Democrats were already tossing their own names into the mix.

"Throw my name in there," said Chicago Democratic Chairman William Beavers, who is also 7th Ward alderman and chairman of the City Council Budget Committee. "I'm serious."
