Description | U.S. District Judge Jeffrey T. Miller overturned a jury's decision and acquitted former city Councilman Michael Zucchet of seven counts of fraud and extortion Thursday. He ordered a new trial for Zucchet on two other felony charges in the city hall corruption case.
Miller denied defense motions to dismiss the convictions of Ralph Inzunza, a former councilman, and Lance Malone, a Las Vegas lobbyist.
Legal experts said the judge's decision to toss out the jury's verdict was very rare, and several legal experts contacted Thursday could not recall a previous case in which it had occurred. Miller ruled that the evidence against Zucchet did not support the convictions. |
