Description | Senator Jon S. Corzine, a Democrat, defeated his Republican rival, Douglas R. Forrester, for governor tonight in a closely contested election in New Jersey.
Mr. Corzine beat out Mr. Forrester by trouncing him in the state's larger counties, such as Essex, which includes the city of Newark, and Hudson County close to New York City, all Democratic strongholds. But he also defeated his rival in some more Republican-leaning areas, such as Bergen County in the north.
With three-quarters of the vote counted, Mr. Corzine led Mr. Forrester by 54 percent to 43 percent. |
